فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَبْلَ وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَخْرَجَهَا مِن وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كِدْنَا لِيُوسُفَ ۖ مَا كَانَ لِيَأْخُذَ أَخَاهُ فِى دِينِ ٱلْمَلِكِ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَٰتٍ مَّن نَّشَآءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌ

Then he began the search with their sacks before the sack of his brother; then he took it out from his brother’s sack. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother under the King’s law unless Allah had so willed. We raise in degrees of rank whomsoever We please; and over every possessor of knowledge is One, Most-Knowing.

Then he began the search with their sacks before the sack of his brother; then he took it out from his brother’s sack. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother under the King’s law unless Allah had so willed. [a]We raise in degrees of rank whomsoever We please; and over every possessor of knowledge is One, Most-Knowing.[1576]

6:84.

Commentary:

The words, Thus did We plan for Joseph, make it clear beyond any shadow of doubt that the whole thing was planned by God Himself, Joseph having no hand in it. Quite inadvertently Joseph happened to place the King’s measuring cup in Benjamin’s luggage and his brothers happened themselves to make the suggestion which enabled Joseph to detain Benjamin.

Incidentally, the verse also shows that even a Prophet living under an alien government should abide by its laws and give it his full cooperation. Joseph desired to keep his brother with him, but the law of the land forbade him to do so. A Providential combination of circumstances, however, enabled him to satisfy his heart’s desire. The mistaken view held by some Muslims that a foreign Government is not entitled to their loyalty and cooperation finds no support in Islam. It tends adversely to affect their morals, and their whole attitude towards their rulers is calculated to become based on insincerity, even hypocrisy.

The words, then he began the search with their sacks before the sack of his brother, do not mean that Joseph made the search personally. The pronoun "he" refers to the man who announced the loss of the measuring cup and who naturally himself came forward to make the search. The reason why he searched Benjamin’s luggage last lies in the fact that, owing to Joseph’s kindly attitude towards him, the proclaimer naturally desired to show the greatest possible deference to Benjamin.

Then he[1396] began with the search of their sacks before the sack of Joseph’s brother;[1396A] then he took it out of the sack of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph.[1397] He could not have taken his brother under the King’s law unless Allah had so willed. [a]We raise in degrees of rank whomsoever We please; and over every possessor of knowledge is One, Most-Knowing.

The pronoun 'he' refers to the man who announced the loss of the measuring-vessel and who naturally himself came forward to make the search.

This was due to the special consideration which Joseph had shown to Benjamin.

The whole thing was planned by God—Joseph having no hand in it. Quite inadvertently Joseph happened to place the King’s measuring-vessel, which he used as a drinking-cup on that occasion, in Benjamin’s luggage and his brothers themselves made the suggestion which enabled Joseph to detain Benjamin. Thus a providential combination of circumstances enabled Joseph to satisfy his heart’s desire.

پھر اس (اعلان کرنے والے) نے اس (یعنی یوسف) کے بھائی کے بورے سے پہلے ان کے بوروں سے شروع کیا پھر اس کے بھائی کے بورے میں سے اس (پیمانہ) کو نکال لیا۔ اس طرح ہم نے یوسف کے لئے تدبیر کی۔ اس کے لئے ممکن نہ تھا کہ اپنے بھائی کو بادشاہ کی حکمرانی میں روک لیتا سوائے اس کے کہ اللہ چاہتا۔ ہم جسے چاہیں درجات کے لحاظ سے بلند کرتے ہیں اور ہر علم رکھنے والے سے برتر ایک صاحبِ علم ہے۔

French

Alors, il commença par fouiller leurs sacoches avant de fouiller celle de son frère ; puis il tira la coupe de la sacoche de son frère. C’est ainsi que Nous avions organisé les choses pour Joseph. D’après la loi du Roi, il n’aurait pu détenir son frère, à moins qu’Allāh ne l’eût voulu. Nous élevons par degrés de rang qui Nous voulons et au-dessus de tous ceux qui possèdent de la connaissance il y a Un Très-Savant.

German

Da begann er (die Suche) mit ihren Säcken vor dem Sack seines Bruders; dann zog er ihn aus seines Bruders Sack hervor. So richteten Wir es ein für Joseph. Er hätte nicht seinen Bruder aufhalten können unter des Königs Gesetz, hätte nicht Allah es so gewollt. Wir erhöhen um Rangstufen, wen Wir wollen; und über jedem mit Wissen Begabten ist Einer, der Allwissende.

他在搜查尤素夫弟弟粮袋之前, 开始搜查他们的粮袋, 后来, 从他弟弟的粮袋中查出了它 (计量容器)。我就这样为尤素夫设下计谋。除非安拉愿意, 按照国王的法律, 他不能留下他的弟弟。[a]我提高我所意欲者的等级, 实际上, 在每一个有知识者的上面都有一个更有知识的。

Quindi egli iniziò la ricerca dai loro sacchi, prima del sacco di suo fratello; poi la tirò fuori dal sacco di suo fratello. Così Noi avevamo escogitato per Giuseppe. Egli non avrebbe potuto trattenere suo fratello, secondo la legge del re, a meno che Allah non lo avesse voluto. Noi eleviamo di rango chiunque Ci piaccia; ma sopra ogni sapiente c'è l'Onnisciente.

Entonces empezó la búsqueda entre sus bolsas antes de la bolsa de su hermano; luego la sacó de la bolsa de su hermano. Así fue nuestro plan para José. No podría haber detenido a su hermano según la ley del Rey salvo que Al-lah así lo hubiera deseado. Pues Nosotros elevamos en grados de dignidad a quien Nos place; y sobre cualquier poseedor de conocimiento está el Único, el Sumo Sabedor.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

پس اس نے (یعنی اعلان کرنے والے نے) اس کے (یعنی یوسف کے) بھائی کے بورے سے پہلے ان (دوسروں[2]) کے بوروں کو (دیکھنا) شروع کیا۔ پھر اس کے بھائی کے بورے (کو دیکھا اور اس میں اس برتن کو پاکر اس) میں سے اسے نکالا۔ اس طرح ہم نے یوسف کے لئے (ایک) تدبیر کی (ورنہ) وہ بادشاہ کے قانون کے اندر (رہتے ہوئے) اپنے بھائی کو اللہ کی تدبیر کے بغیر روک نہیں سکتا تھا۔ ہم جس کے چاہتے ہیں درجات بلند کرتے ہیں اور (حقیقت یہ ہے کہ) ہر علم والے کے اوپر (اس سے) زیادہ علم والی ہستی (پائی جاتی) ہے۔

نوکر سمجھ گئے تھے کہ بن یامین یوسفؑ کی نظر میں مقرب ہے۔ اس لئے انہوں نے اس کا بورا پیچھے دیکھا مگر خداتعالیٰ نے یوسفؑ کو بھلوا کر پیمانہ جو پانی پینے کے کام بھی آتا تھا۔ اس کے بھائی کے بورے میں رکھوا دیا تھا اور یہ خدائی فعل تھا‘ نہ کہ یوسفؑ کا۔ اسی لئے اللہ تعالیٰ فرماتا ہے کہ یہ تدبیر ہم نے یوسفؑ کے لئے کی تھی تاکہ وہ اپنے بھائی کو روک سکے ورنہ ملکی قانون کے مطابق بغیر کسی جرم کے وہ اسے روک نہیں سکتا تھا۔ اس آیت سے ثابت ہے کہ یوسفؑ نے کوئی دھوکہ نہیں کیا بلکہ اللہ نے اسے بھلوا دیا تا بھائی کو روک سکے۔ بھائی کا بھی کوئی نقصان نہ ہوا بلکہ وزیروں کی صحبت اور رتبہ ملا۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

تب یوسفؑ نے اپنے بھائی سے پہلے اُن کی خرجیوں کی تلاشی لینی شروع کی، پھر اپنے بھائی کی خرجی سے گم شدہ چیز برآمد کر لی اِس طرح ہم نے یوسفؑ کی تائید اپنی تدبیر سے کی اُس کا یہ کام نہ تھا کہ بادشاہ کے دین (یعنی مصر کے شاہی قانون) میں اپنے بھائی کو پکڑتا الا یہ کہ اللہ ہی ایسا چاہے ہم جس کے درجے چاہتے ہیں بلند کر دیتے ہیں، اور ایک علم رکھنے والا ایسا ہے جو ہر صاحب علم سے بالا تر ہے

English - Sahih

So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.

پھر یوسف نے اپنے بھائی کے اسباب سے پہلےان کے اسباب دیکھنے شروع کیے پھر وہ کٹورا اپنے بھائی کے اسباب سے نکالا ہم نے یوسف کو ایسی تدبیر بتائی تھی بادشاہ کے قانون سے تو وہ اپنے بھائی کو ہرگز نہ لے سکتا تھا مگر یہ کہ الله چاہے ہم جس کے چاہیں درجے بلند کرتے ہیں اور ہر ایک دانا سے بڑھ کر دوسرا دانا ہے

So he made beginning with their sacks, before his brother's sack, then he pulled it out of his brother's sack. So We contrived for Joseph's sake; he could not have taken his brother, according to the king's doom, except that God willed. Whomsoever We will, We raise in rank; over every man of knowledge is One who knows.

English - Maududi

Then Joseph began searching their bags before searching his own brother's bag. Then he brought forth the drinking-cup from his brother's bag. Thus did We contrive to support Joseph. He had no right, according to the religion of the king (i.e. the law of Egypt), to take his brother, unless Allah so willed. We exalt whomsoever We will over others by several degrees. And above all those who know is the One Who truly knows.

So he searched their saddle-bags before his brother's, then produced the cup from his brother's bag. That is how We planned an excuse for Joseph, for under the law of the king he could not detain his brother unless God so willed. We raise the status of whom We please. Over every man of knowledge there is one more knowing.

So he began (the search) with their baggage, before (he came to) the baggage of his brother: at length he brought it out of his brother's baggage. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not take his brother by the law of the king except that Allah willed it (so). We raise to degrees (of wisdom) whom We please: but over all endued with knowledge is one, the All-Knowing.
