۞ قَالُوٓا۟ إِن يَسْرِقْ فَقَدْ سَرَقَ أَخٌ لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِى نَفْسِهِۦ وَلَمْ يُبْدِهَا لَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ أَنتُمْ شَرٌّ مَّكَانًا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُونَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

They said, ‘If he has stolen, a brother of his had also committed theft before.’ But Joseph kept it secret in his heart and did not disclose it to them. He simply said, ‘You seem to be in the worst condition; and Allah knows best what you allege.’

Commentary:

One sin leads to another. Joseph’s brothers had first sought to put him to death. Now quite unashamedly they hastened to accuse him of theft. Strangely enough, some commentators, instead of dismissing this baseless accusation as a malicious lie, start searching for some act of stealing in Joseph’s life and have gone so far as to declare that while a child he had stolen a few things from the house of his aunt.

The words, You seem to be in the worst condition, pathetically point to Joseph’s painful thought that, instead of repenting after their early lapse, his brothers had now become even more degenerate than before.

English - Short Commentary Translation

They said, ‘If he has stolen, a brother of his had also committed theft before.’[1398] But Joseph kept it secret in his heart and did not disclose it to them. He simply said, ‘You are in a worst condition; and Allah knows best what you allege.’

انہوں نے کہا اگر اس نے چوری کی ہے تو اس کے ایک بھائی نے بھی اس سے پہلے چوری کی تھی تو یوسف نے اس (الزام کے اثر) کو اپنے دل میں چھپا لیا اور اُسے ان پر ظاہر نہ کیا۔ (ہاں دل ہی دل میں) کہا تم مقام کے لحاظ سے بدترین ہو اور اللہ ہی بہتر جانتا ہے جو تم بیان کرتے ہو۔

French

Ils dirent : « S’il a volé, un frère à lui a aussi volé auparavant. » Mais Joseph tint cela secret dans son cœur et ne le leur divulgua pas. Il dit simplement : « Vous êtes dans la pire des situations ; et Allāh sait le mieux ce que vous alléguez. »

Sie sprachen: "Hat er gestohlen, so hat zuvor schon sein Bruder Diebstahl verübt." Jedoch Joseph hielt es in seinem Herzen geheim und offenbarte es ihnen nicht. Er sprach: "Ihr (scheint) in der übelsten Lage zu sein; und Allah weiß am besten, was ihr behauptet."

他们 (他的弟兄们) 说: “如果他偷窃了, (那也不必大惊小怪,) 他的哥哥从前也偷窃过。” 那时尤素夫把它 (自己的话) 隐藏在心中, 没有向他们显示出来。他 (仅仅) 说: “你们正处在最坏的情况下; 安拉最知道你们所说的。”

Italian

Essi dissero: «Se egli ha rubato, già rubò prima di lui anche un suo fratello.» Però Giuseppe tenne la cosa nascosta nel suo cuore e non la svelò a loro. Disse semplicemente: «Voi mi sembrate in condizione peggiore; e Allah sa meglio di ogni altro se è vero ciò che affermate.»

Spanish

Ellos dijeron: “Si él ha robado, un hermano suyo cometió también un robo antes”. Pero José lo mantuvo en secreto en su corazón y no se lo reveló a ellos. Les dijo simplemente: “Parece que estáis en la peor situación; pues Al-lah sabe mejor lo que alegáis”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

انہوں نے (یعنی اس کے بھائیوں نے) کہا (کہ) اگر اس نے چوری کی ہو تو (کچھ عجب نہیں کیونکہ) اس کا ایک[1] بھائی (بھی) پہلے چوری کر چکا ہے۔ اس پر یوسف نے (اپنے دل کی بات کو) اپنے دل میں پوشیدہ رکھا۔ اور ان پر اسے ظاہر نہ کیا (ہاں دل میں اتنا) کہا (کہ) تم (لوگ) بڑے بدبخت ہو اور جو بات تم کہتے ہو اسے اللہ (ہی) بہتر جانتا ہے۔

چونکہ چھوٹا بھائی آیا تھا۔ بھائیوں نے اس ڈر سے یوسفؑ کو چور قرار دے دیا کہ کہیں یوسفؑ پوچھ نہ بیٹھے کہ بڑے بھائی کو کیوں نہیں لائے۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

ان بھائیوں نے کہا "یہ چوری کرے تو کچھ تعجب کی بات بھی نہیں، اس سے پہلے اس کا بھائی (یوسفؑ) بھی چوری کر چکا ہے" یوسفؑ ان کی یہ بات سن کر پی گیا، حقیقت ان پر نہ کھولی بس (زیر لب) اتنا کہہ کر رہ گیا کہ "بڑے ہی برے ہو تم لوگ، (میرے منہ در منہ مجھ پر) جو الزام تم لگا رہے ہو اس کی حقیقت خدا خوب جانتا ہے"

English - Sahih

They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allah is most knowing of what you describe."

اردو ترجمہ احمد علی

انہوں نے کہا اگر اس نے چوری کی ہے تو اس سے پہلے اس کے بھائی نے بھی چوری کی تھی تب یوسف نے اپنے دل میں آہستہ سے کہا اور انہیں نہیں جتایا کہا تم درجے میں بدتر ہو اور الله خوب جانتا ہے جو کچھ تم بیان کرتے ہو

They said, "If he steals - then verily stole a brother of his before." But Yusuf kept it secret within himself, and (did) not reveal it to them. He said, "You (are the) worse (in) position, and Allah knows best of what you describe."

English - Arberry

They said, 'If he is a thief, a brother of his was a thief before.' But Joseph secreted it in his soul and disclosed it not to them, saying, 'You are in a worse case; God knows very well what you are describing.'

English - Maududi

They said: "No wonder that he steals for a brother of his stole before." But Joseph kept his reaction to himself without disclosing the truth to them. He merely said to himself: "You are an evil lot. Allah knows well the truth of the accusation that you are making against me (to my face)."

Said the brothers: "If he has stolen (no wonder), his brother had stolen before." But Joseph kept this secret and did not disclose it to them, and said (to himself): "You are worse in the degree of evil, for God knows better of what you allege."
