وَلَقَدْ أَتَوْا۟ عَلَى ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ٱلَّتِىٓ أُمْطِرَتْ مَطَرَ ٱلسَّوْءِ ۚ أَفَلَمْ يَكُونُوا۟ يَرَوْنَهَا ۚ بَلْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ نُشُورًا

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And these (Meccans) must have visited the town whereon was rained an evil rain. Have they not then seen it? Nay, they hope not to be raised after death.

English - Five Volume Translation

And these (Meccans) must have visited [a]the town whereon was rained an evil rain. Have they not then seen it? Nay, they hope not to be raised after death.[2674]

7:85; 27:59.

Commentary:

The reference in the word "the town" may be to Sodom, the town of Lot, which was situated on the way from Arabia to Syria.

نشور (to be raised) may also signify the hour of the triumph of Islam. The Quraish did not have the remotest idea that the cause of the Holy Prophet would or could ever triumph.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور وہ (تیرے مخالف) ایسی بستی پر (بارہا) گزرچکے ہیں جس پر بُری بارش برسائی گئی تھی۔ پس کیا وہ اس پر غور نہ کرسکے؟ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ وہ اٹھائے جانے کی امید ہی نہیں رکھتے۔

Et ils ont dû visiter la ville sur laquelle il fut envoyé une pluie funeste. Ne l’ont-ils donc pas vue ? Non, ils n’espèrent pas être ressuscités.

German

Und sie* müssen die Stadt besucht haben, auf die ein böser Regen niederregnete**. Haben sie denn sie nicht gesehen? Nein, sie harren nicht auf die Auferstehung.

他们 (麦加的不信者) 确已到过[c]那个曾受霪雨侵袭的城市, 难道他们没有看见它 (那城市的遗迹)? 不, 他们不希望死后复生。

Italian

E questi devono pure aver visitato la città su cui era piovuta una pioggia funesta. Non l'hanno vista forse? No, sperano di non essere risuscitati dopo la morte.

Y éstos deben haber visitado la ciudad sobre la que cayó una lluvia efasta. ¿Acaso no la han visto? No, no esperan ser resucitados después de la muerte.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور یہ (مکہ کے کفار) اس بستی کے پاس سے گذر چکے ہیں[1] جس پر ایک تکلیف دہ بارش نازل کی گئی تھی۔ کیا یہ اس (بستی کے نشانوں) کو نہیں دیکھتے۔ حقیقت[2] یہ ہے کہ یہ دوبارہ اٹھنے کی امید ہی نہیں رکھتے تھے۔

یعنی لوط علیہ السلام کی قوم۔

قرآن کریم میں اس جگہ بَلْ کا لفظ ہے۔ جس کے معنے ’’بلکہ‘‘ کے بھی ہیں۔ اور ’’اظہار حقیقت‘‘ کے بھی۔ اس لئے ہم نے اس جگہ ’’بلکہ‘‘ ترجمہ نہیں کیا صرف ’’حقیقت یہ ہے‘‘ کے الفاظ لکھے ہیں۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اور اُس بستی پر تو اِن کا گزر ہو چکا ہے جس پر بدترین بارش برسائی گئی تھی کیا انہوں نے اس کا حال دیکھا نہ ہو گا؟ مگر یہ موت کے بعد دوسری زندگی کی توقع ہی نہیں رکھتے

English - Sahih

And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.

اور یہ اس بستی پر بھی گزرے ہیں جس پر بری طرح پتھر برسائے گئے سو کیا یہ لوگ اسے دیکھتے نہیں رہتے بلکہ یہ لوگ مر کر زندہ ہونے کی امید ہی نہیں رکھتے

Surely they have come by the city that was rained on by an evil rain; what, have they not seen it? Nay, but they look for no upraising.

Surely, these people have passed by that habitation on which was rained an evil rain: have they not seen its ruins? But they do not expect another life in the Hereafter.

They must have surely passed by the town on which We had rained the terrible rain of ruin. How could they not have seen it? Still they do not dread the Resurrection.

And the (Unbelievers) must indeed have passed by the town on which was rained a shower of evil: did they not then see it (with their own eyes)? But they fear not the Resurrection.
