قَالَ بَلْ أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ فَإِذَا حِبَالُهُمْ وَعِصِيُّهُمْ يُخَيَّلُ إِلَيْهِ مِن سِحْرِهِمْ أَنَّهَا تَسْعَىٰ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

He said, ‘Nay, throw ye.’ Then lo! their cords and their staves appeared to him, by their magic, as though they ran about.

English - Five Volume Translation

He said, [b]‘Nay, cast ye.’ Then lo! their cords and their staves [c]appeared to him, by their magic as though they ran about.[2286]

Important Words:

عصیھم (their staves). عصی is the plural of عصا which means: (1) a piece of wood on which one reclines, a stick, a stave; a party; the tongue (Lane & Aqrab).

Commentary:

The words "Nay, cast ye", show that the Prophets of God never take the offensive. They wait till they are attacked and then they defend themselves.

The expression یخیل الیه (appeared to him) clearly indicates that the cords and staves of the magicians only appeared to Moses as though they ran about. Actually they did nothing of the kind. The forces of evil at first appear to carry the day for a short while but they soon come to grief and suffer defeat and destruction.

[c]Moses said. ‘Nay, cast[1832] ye.’ Then lo! their cords and their staves [d]appeared[1833] to him, by their magic, as though they ran about.

God’s Prophets never take the offensive. They wait till they are attacked and then they defend themselves.

The cords and staves of the magicians appeared to Moses only as though they ran about. Actually they did nothing of the kind. The forces of evil at first appear to carry the day for a short while, but they soon come to grief.

اس نے کہا بلکہ تم ہی ڈالو۔ پس اچانک ان کے جادو کی وجہ سے اسے خیال دلایا گیا کہ ان کی رسیاں اور ان کی سونٹیاں دوڑ رہی ہیں۔

Il dit : « Non, mais jetez en premier. » Et voilà que leurs cordes et leurs bâtons lui parurent par leur magie comme s’ils couraient ça et là.

Er sprach: "Nein; werfet nur ihr!" Da siehe, ihre Stricke und ihre Stäbe erschienen ihm, durch ihre Zauberei, als ob sie umherliefen.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

(تب موسیٰ نے) کہا (بہتر یہ ہے) کہ تم (اپنی تدبیر) پھینکو (یعنی ظاہر کرو) پس (انہوں نے جو تدبیر کی) اس کے نتیجہ میں ان کی رسیاں اور ان کے سونٹے موسیٰ کو (ان کے فریب کی وجہ سے) یوں نظر آئے گویا کہ وہ دوڑ رہے ہیں۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

موسیٰؑ نے کہا "نہیں، تم ہی پھینکو" یکایک اُن کی رسّیاں اور اُن کی لاٹھیاں اُن کے جادو کے زور سے موسیٰؑ کو دَوڑتی ہوئی محسوس ہونے لگیں

He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].

کہا بلکہ تم ڈالو پس اچانک ان کی رسیاں او رلاٹھیاں ان کے جادو سے اس کے خیال میں دوڑ رہی ہیں
