English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

Verily, those whom the angels cause to die while they are wronging their own souls, they (the angels) will say to them: ‘What were you after?’ They will reply: ‘We were treated as weak in the land.’ They will say, ‘Was not Allah’s earth vast enough for you to emigrate therein?’ It is these whose abode shall be Hell, and an evil destination it is;

German

Zu jenen, die – Unrecht gegen sich selbst tuend* – von Engeln dahingerafft werden, werden diese sprechen: "Wonach strebtet ihr?" Sie werden antworten: "Wir wurden als Schwache im Lande behandelt." Da sprechen jene: "War Allahs Erde nicht weit genug für euch, dass ihr darin hättet auswandern können?" Sie sind es, deren Aufenthalt die Hölle sein wird, und übel ist die Bestimmung;

16:29.

Spanish

En verdad, a quienes los ángeles hacen morir mientras están perjudicando sus propias almas, ellos (los ángeles) les dirán: “¿Qué buscabais?”. Responderán: “Fuimos tratados como débiles en la tierra”. Dirán: “¿No era la tierra de Al-lah suficientemente amplia para que pudierais emigrar?”. Éstos son los que morarán en el Infierno; ¡qué pésimo destino!;

English - Short Commentary Translation

Verily, [a]those whom the angels cause to die while they are wronging their own souls, the angels will say to them: ‘What were you after?’ They will say: ‘We were treated as weak in the land.’ The angels will say, ‘Was not Allah’s earth spacious enough so that you could have emigrated therein?’[655] It is these whose abode shall be Hell, and an evil destination it is;

16:29.

Islam would not be satisfied with a weak or passive belief. If the environments of a believer are not congenial to the Faith he must shift to a more congenial place and if he does not do so he will not be regarded as sincere in his Faith.

English - Five Volume Translation

Verily, [a]those whom the angels cause to die while they are wronging their own souls, they (the angels) will say to them: ‘What were you after?’ They will reply: ‘We were treated as weak in the land.’ They will say, ‘Was not Allah’s earth vast enough for you to migrate therein?’ It is these whose abode shall be Hell, and an evil destination it is;[566]

16:29.

Commentary:

The words فتھاجروا (for you to migrate) show that the people referred to here were not so weak as not to be able to migrate from their homes. They were thus not truly "disabled ones" as mentioned in 4:96 above. The present verse, therefore, strongly condemns them. Islam would not be satisfied with a weak or passive belief, for it is neither good for the believer nor for the community. If the environment of a believer is not suitable for him, he should shift to a different environment more congenial to his faith; and if he does not do so, he is not sincere in his faith.

English - Sahih

Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." The angels will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.

English - Talal Itani

Indeed, those whom - take them (in death) the Angels (while) they (were) wronging themselves they say, "In what (condition) were you?" They said, "We were oppressed in the earth." They said, "Not was (the) earth (of) Allah spacious (enough) so that you (could) emigrate in it?" Then those (will have) their abode (in) Hell - and it is an evil destination.

English - Arberry

And those the angels take, while still they are wronging themselves -- the angels will say, 'In what circumstances were you?' They will say, 'We were abased in the earth.' The angels will say, 'But was not God's earth wide, so that you might have emigrated in it?' Such men, their refuge shall be Gehenna -- an evil homecoming! --

English - Maududi

While taking the souls of those who were engaged in wronging themselves, the angels asked: 'In what circumstances were you?' They replied: 'We were too weak and helpless in the land.' The angels said: 'Was not the earth of Allah wide enough for you to emigrate in it?' For such men their refuge is Hell - an evil destination indeed;

English - Ahmed Ali

As for those whose souls are taken by the angels (at death) while in a state of unbelief, they will be asked by the angels: "What (state) were you in?" They will answer: "We were oppressed in the land." And the angels will say: "Was not God's earth large enough for you to migrate?" Their abode will be Hell, and what an evil destination!

English - Yusuf Ali

When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what (plight) Were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed Were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away (From evil)?" Such men will find their abode in Hell,- What an evil refuge! -

Lo! as for those whom the angels take (in death) while they wrong themselves, (the angels) will ask: In what were ye engaged? They will say: We were oppressed in the land. (The angels) will say: Was not Allah's earth spacious that ye could have migrated therein? As for such, their habitation will be hell, an evil journey's end;

English - Muhammad Ali ^ra

(As for) those whom the angels cause to die while they are unjust to themselves, (the angels) will say: What were you doing? They will say: We were weak in the earth. (They will) say: Was not Allah’s earth spacious, so that you could have migrated therein? So these it is whose refuge is hell -- and it is an evil resort.

English - Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan ^ra

When the angels cause those who wrong their souls to die, they will question them: What were you after? They will answer: We were accounted weak in the land. The angels will retort: Was not Allah’s earth vast enough for you to emigrate therein? It is these whose abode shall be hell, and an evil destination it is;
