أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ وَتَقْطَعُونَ ٱلسَّبِيلَ وَتَأْتُونَ فِى نَادِيكُمُ ٱلْمُنكَرَ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئْتِنَا بِعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

‘Do you indeed come lustfully to men and cut off the highway for travellers? And you commit abomination in your meetings!’ But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Bring upon us the punishment of Allah if thou speakest the truth.’

[a]‘Do you approach men with lust and commit robbery on the highway? And you commit abomination in your meetings!’ But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Bring upon us the punishment of Allah if thou speakest the truth.’[2960]

Important Words

تقطعون (commit robbery) is formed from قطع. They say قطع الشیء i.e. he cut off the thing; explained and expounded it. قطعه عن حقه means, he deprived him of his right. قطع الصلوة means, he rendered the Prayer nugatory.

قطع الطریق علی السالکین means, he made the way dangerous to the wayfarers and forbade them to use it (Aqrab).

Commentary:

The expression تقطعون السبیل means:

(a) you rob travellers on the highway. Lot’s people had adopted the calling of the road; or

(b) you violate the Divinely appointed sex-laws and commit unnatural offences.

Three vices have been ascribed to the people of Lot in this verse: (1) unnatural vice; (2) highway robbery; and (3) committing crimes openly and unashamedly in their assemblies.

[d]‘What! do you approach men with lust and commit robbery on the highway,[2249] and you commit abomination in your meetings?’[2250] But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Bring upon us the punishment of Allah if thou speakest the truth.’

Qata‘ut-Tariqa meaning, he made the way dangerous for wayfarers and forbade them to use it, the Quranic expression signifies: (a) You rob travellers on the highway (Lot’s people had adopted the calling of the road). (b) You violate the Divinely appointed sex-laws and commit unnatural offences.

Three vices have been ascribed to the people of Lot in this verse, (1) unnatural vice; (2) highway robbery; (3) committing crimes openly and unashamedly in their assemblies.

کیا تم (شہوت کے ساتھ) مَردوں کی طرف آتے ہو اور راہزنی کرتے ہو اور اپنی مجالس میں سخت ناپسندیدہ باتیں کرتے ہو۔ پس اس کی قوم کا جواب کچھ نہ تھا مگر (یہ) کہ انہوں نے کہا ہمارے پاس اللہ کا عذاب لے آ اگر تُو سچوں میں سے ہے۔

French

Vous approchez-vous en fait lascivement des hommes, et commettez-vous des vols de grand chemin ? Et dans vos assemblées vous vous adonnez à tout ce qui est répugnant ! » Mais la seule réponse de son peuple fut qu’ils dirent : « Amène sur nous le châtiment d’Allāh si tu dis vrai. »

Naht ihr euch tatsächlich Männern (in Begierde) und raubet ihr auf der Landstraße? Und in euren Versammlungen begeht ihr Abscheuliches!" Jedoch die Antwort seines Volkes war nur, dass sie sprachen: "Bringe Allahs Strafe über uns, wenn du die Wahrheit redest."

Vi accostate agli uomini libidinosamente e fate brigantaggio per le strade? E commettete abominio nelle vostre riunioni?» Ma la sola risposta del suo popolo fu che dissero: «Se dici la verità, facci cadere addosso il castigo di Allah.»

“¿Os acercáis en verdad disimuladamente a los hombres y cortáis el camino a los viajeros? ¡Os permitís todo lo aborrecible en vuestras reuniones! “Pero la única respuesta de su pueblo fue que dijeron: “Trae sobre nosotros el castigo de Al‑lah si dices la verdad”.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

کیا تم (عورتوں کو چھوڑ کر) مردوں کے پاس آتے ہو اور ڈاکے مارتے ہو۔ اور اپنی مجالس میں ناپسندیدہ[1] حرکتیں کرتے ہو۔ اس پر اس کی قوم کا جواب اس کے سوا کچھ نہ تھا کہ انہوں نے کہہ دیا کہ اگر تو سچے لوگوں میں سے ہے تو اللہ کا عذاب ہم پر نازل کر دے۔

یعنی مسافروں سے ہنسی مذاق کرتے یا ان پر ظلم کرتے ہو۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

کیا تمہارا حال یہ ہے کہ مَردوں کے پاس جاتے ہو، اور رہزنی کرتے ہو اور اپنی مجلسوں میں بُرے کام کرتے ہو؟" پھر کوئی جواب اس کی قوم کے پاس اس کے سوا نہ تھا کہ انہوں نے کہا "لے آ اللہ کا عذاب اگر تو سچّا ہے"

English - Sahih

Indeed, you approach men and obstruct the road and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allah, if you should be of the truthful."

کیا تم مردوں کے پاس جاتے ہو اور تم ڈاکے ڈالتے ہو اور اپنی مجلس میں برا کام کرتے ہو پھر اس کی قوم کے پاس اس کے سوا کوئی جواب نہ تھا کہ تو ہم پر الله کا عذاب لے آ اگر تو سچا ہے
