وَمَا كُنتَ بِجَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ إِذْ نَادَيْنَا وَلَٰكِن رَّحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّآ أَتَىٰهُم مِّن نَّذِيرٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And thou wast not at the side of the Mount when We called. But We have sent thee as a mercy from thy Lord, that thou mayest warn a people to whom no Warner had come before thee, that they may reflect.

And thou wast not on the side of the Mount with Moses when [a]We called to him. But We have sent thee as a mercy from thy Lord, [b]that thou mayest warn a people to whom no Warner had come before thee, that they may reflect.[2909]

Commentary:

The present verse continues the theme of the preceding two verses and purports to say that God spoke to Moses at the side of Mount Sinai, giving him the glad tidings that a Prophet like unto him would appear among the brethren of the Israelites (Deut. 18:18). It further implies that it was not possible for the Holy Prophet first to have caused Moses to make a prophecy concerning him and then to have claimed to have come in fulfilment of that prophecy. The verse emphasizes the fact that one Prophet (Moses) made a prophecy concerning another Prophet (the Holy Prophet) about two thousand years ago in a place far away from the scene of the activities of the latter, and that that prophecy was literally fulfilled in him. It proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the maker of the prophecy, and he about whom the prophecy was made were both true Prophets of God.

And thou wast not on the side of the Mount with Moses, [a]when We called to him and revealed to him Our prophecy concerning thee.[2220] But We have sent thee as a mercy from thy Lord, [b]that thou mayest warn a people to whom no warner had come before thee, that they may be mindful.

The verse implies that it was not possible for the Holy Prophet first to have caused Moses to make a prophecy concerning him (Deut. 18: 18) and then to have claimed to have come in fulfilment of that prophecy.

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور تُو طُور کے کنارے پر نہیں تھا جب ہم نے (موسیٰ کو) آواز دی لیکن (تُو) اپنے ربّ کی طرف سے ایک عظیم رحمت کے طور پر (بھیجا گیا ہے) تاکہ ایسی قوم کو جس کے پاس تجھ سے پہلے کوئی ڈرانے والا نہیں آیا، تُو ڈرائے۔ تاکہ وہ نصیحت پکڑیں۔

French

Et tu n’étais pas sur le versant du Mont quand Nous avons appelé. Mais Nous t’avons envoyé comme une miséricorde de la part de ton Seigneur, afin que tu puisses avertir un peuple que personne n’était venu avertir avant toi, afin qu’ils fassent attention.

German

Und du warst nicht auf der Seite des Berges, da Wir riefen. Doch (Wir haben dich entsandt) als eine Barmherzigkeit von deinem Herrn, damit du ein Volk warnen möchtest dem vor dir kein Warner gekommen war, auf dass sie ermahnt seien.

E tu non eri sul fianco del monte, quando Noi chiamammo. Noi ti abbiamo mandato come una misericordia dal tuo Signore, perché potessi ammonire un popolo al quale nessun ammonitore era giunto prima di te, affinché riflettessero.

Spanish

Tampoco estabas en la ladera del Monte cuando convocamos. Pero te hemos enviado como misericordia de tu Señor para que adviertas a un pueblo al que no había llegado Amonestador ninguno antes de ti, a fin de que reflexionen.

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور تو طور کی جانب نہیں تھا۔ جب کہ ہم نے (موسیٰ کو) پکارا لیکن یہ سب کچھ تیرے رب کی طرف سے رحمت ہے تا کہ تو اس قوم کو ہوشیار کرے جن کے پاس تجھ سے پہلے کوئی ہوشیار کرنے والا نہیں آیا تھا تا کہ وہ نصیحت حاصل کریں۔[1]

یعنی کفار مکہ کہ گو ابراہیمؑ کی نسل سے تھے مگر ابراہیمؑ ان سے صدیوں پہلے گذرے تھے۔ پس ضروری تھا کہ کوئی نیا نبی آکر ان کو خدا کی طرف توجہ دلائے۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

اور تم طور کے دامن میں بھی اُس وقت موجود نہ تھے جب ہم نے (موسیٰؑ کو پہلی مرتبہ) پکارا تھا، مگر یہ تمہارے رب کی رحمت ہے (کہ تم کو یہ معلومات دی جار ہی ہیں) تاکہ تم اُن لوگوں کو متنبّہ کر دو جن کے پاس تم سے پہلے کوئی متنبّہ کرنے والا نہیں آیا، شاید کہ وہ ہوش میں آئیں

English - Sahih

And you were not at the side of the mount when We called [Moses] but [were sent] as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner had come before you that they might be reminded.

اور تو طور کے کنارے پر نہ تھا جب ہم نے آواز دی لیکن تیرے رب کا یہ انعام ہے تاکہ ان لوگو ں کو ڈرائے جن کے پاس تجھ سے پہلے کوئی ڈرانے والا نہیں آیا تاکہ وہ نصیحت حاصل کریں

And not you were at (the) side (of) the Tur when We called. But (as) a mercy from your Lord so that you warn a people not (had) come to them any warner before you so that they may remember.

Thou wast not upon the side of the Mount when We called; but for a mercy from thy Lord, that thou mayest warn a people to whom no warner came before thee, and that haply they may remember.

English - Maududi

Nor were you on the side of the Mount (Sinai) when We called out to Moses (in the first instance). But it is out of Mercy from your Lord (that you are being informed of all this) so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you. Maybe they will take heed.
