أَوْ خَلْقًا مِّمَّا يَكْبُرُ فِى صُدُورِكُمْ ۚ فَسَيَقُولُونَ مَن يُعِيدُنَا ۖ قُلِ ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ إِلَيْكَ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هُوَ ۖ قُلْ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ قَرِيبًا

‘Or created matter of any kind which appears hardest in your minds, even then shall you be raised up.’ Then will they ask, ‘Who shall restore us to life?’ Say, ‘He Who created you the first time.’ They will then shake their heads at thee and say, ‘When will it be?’ Say, ‘Maybe it is nigh,

Commentary:

The expression, Who shall restore us to life, does not mean that disbelievers really enquire as to who will bring them to life again. It only signifies that they ridicule the very idea of their being restored to a new life.

The words, maybe it is nigh, signify that the resurrection promised to disbelievers in this verse is not the one which will take place after death, but the one which was to take place shortly in their lives. This prophecy was fulfilled after the Fall of Mecca when the whole of Arabia embraced Islam. Those who were spiritually dead were restored to a new life.

The verse may either be taken as saying to disbelievers that even if their hearts should become hard like iron or stone or any other similar substance, God would bring about among them that wholesome change which He has decreed to bring about through the Holy Prophet. Or, it may be taken as answering their doubts about Resurrection mentioned in the previous verse, and says to them that they could not escape Divine punishment even if they became converted into iron or stone or any other hard substance.

یا ایسی مخلوق جو تمہاری دانست میں (سختی میں) اس سے بھی بڑھ کر ہو۔ تواس پر وہ ضرور کہیں گے کہ کون (ہے جو) ہمیں لوٹائے گا؟ تُو کہہ دے وہی جس نے تمہیں پہلی مرتبہ پیداکیا تھا۔ تو وہ تیری طرف (منہ کرکے) اپنے سر مٹکائیں گے اور کہیں گے ایسا کب ہوگا؟ تُو کہہ دے ہو سکتا ہے کہ جلد ایسا ہو۔

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

یا کوئی اور ایسی مخلوق جو تمہارے دلوں میں ان سے بھی سخت نظر آتی ہو (تب بھی تم کو دوبارہ زندہ کیا جائے گا) (یہ سن کر) وہ ضرور کہیں گے (کہ) کون ہمیں دوبارہ (زندہ کرکے وجود میں) لائے گا۔ تو (انہیں) کہہ (کہ) وہی (خدا) جس نے تمہیں پہلی بار پیدا کیا تھا۔ اس پر وہ لازماً تعجب سے تمہاری طرف (دیکھتے ہوئے) سر ہلائیں گے اور کہیں گے (کہ) یہ (زندہ کیے جانے کا معاملہ) کب ہوگا؟ (جب وہ ایسا کہیں تو) تو (ان سے) کہہ (کہ) بالکل ممکن ہے کہ وہ (وقت اب) قریب [1](آچکا) ہو۔

اس سے معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ یہ آیت دنیوی تباہی اور اس کے بعد کی زندگی کے متعلق ہے۔ کیونکہ اُخروی زندگی کے متعلق تو کفار سمجھ نہیں سکتے تھے کہ اس کا وقت قریب آگیا ہے۔ نہ ابھی ہڈیاں ہو کر چُورا ہونے کا وقت آیا تھا۔ پس اس جگہ مراد اسی دنیا کی سیاسی یا قومی موت اور پھر دوبارہ احیا ہے۔

یا اس سے بھی زیادہ سخت کوئی چیز جو تمہارے ذہن میں قبول حیات سے بعید تر ہو" (پھر بھی تم اٹھ کر رہو گے) وہ ضرور پوچھیں گے "کون ہے وہ جو ہمیں پھر زندگی کی طرف پلٹا کر لائے گا؟" جواب میں کہو "وہی جس نے پہلی بار تم کو پیدا کیا" وہ سر ہلا ہلا کر پوچھیں گے "اچھا، تو یہ ہوگا کب؟" تم کہو "کیا عجب، وہ وقت قریب ہی آ لگا ہو

Or [any] creation of that which is great within your breasts." And they will say, "Who will restore us?" Say, "He who brought you forth the first time." Then they will nod their heads toward you and say, "When is that?" Say, "Perhaps it will be soon -
