[g]He said, ‘Do you give me this glad tidings despite the fact that old age has overtaken me? On what basis, then, do you give me this glad tidings?’

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اس نے کہا کیا تم نے مجھے خوشخبری دی ہے باوجود اس کے کہ مجھے بڑھاپے نے آ لیا ہے۔ پس تم کس بنا پر خوشخبری دے رہے ہو؟

Il dit : « M’annoncez-vous cette bonne nouvelle bien que la vieillesse m’ait atteint ? Sur quoi donc vous vous basez pour m’annoncer cette bonne nouvelle ? »

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اس نے کہا (کہ) کیا تم نے میرے بوڑھا ہو جانے کے باوجود مجھے یہ بشارت دی ہے‘ پس (بتاؤ کہ) کس بنا پر تم مجھے (یہ) بشارت دیتے ہو۔

اردو ترجمہ مودودی

ابراہیمؑ نے کہا "کیا تم اِس بڑھاپے میں مجھے اولاد کی بشارت دیتے ہو؟ ذرا سوچو تو سہی کہ یہ کیسی بشارت تم مجھے دے رہے ہو؟"

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

Commentary:

فبم (of what then) is the abbreviated form of فبما which is formed of three words i.e. ف and ب and ما meaning respectively "then," "of" and "what."

Commentary:

In view of his advanced age, Abraham felt that the news of the birth of a son to him must have had its basis in Divine revelation. So, in order to make sure, he asked the messengers to tell him on what authority they gave him these glad tidings. The words فبم تبشرون not only mean, "Of what then you give me the glad tidings?" but also, "What is the basis of your glad tidings?"
